Two fun spring events are coming up soon. On Tuesday, May 9 students in grades 3-8 will explore Eagle Creek near the bridge at the corner of Scofield Road and Eagle Creek Road. Under the supervision of Mrs. Dragoo and SMS staff members, students will explore the creek area identifying different types of wildlife found in our very own back yard! This is always a fun and educational experience for our students, and a great example of real, hands-on science. Students will travel in three different groups by bus beginning at 9:00 am and will be finished by the end of the school day. Each group will be there for approximately 90 minutes. On that day students should wear old clothes and shoes that can get muddy or wet. They should also bring a change of clothes and shoes and a beach towel. If any Safe Parish compliant parents would like to volunteer that day, it would be great to have more adults to help, please let us know if you would like to join.
On Monday, May 22 our 8th grade will carry on the tradition of exploring Eagle Creek by kayaking the creek. This event usually takes most of the morning. On this day, students will be transported by Mr. Arn, Mrs. Dragoo, and other SMS staff members to the same location as the Creek Science lab is located. There, they will put kayaks in the creek and paddle to the Eagle Creek Marina where they will be picked up and driven back to school. Mr. Pedigo and Mrs. Dragoo will chaperone this event. Mrs. Dragoo has friends who lend kayaks and life vests for our students, but if anyone has their own, please let us know. Also, if there are any experienced kayakers in the SMS family who would like to join us that day, please let us know. The more the merrier!
Both of these events have proven to be great memories for our students and staff alike. We are blessed to have these opportunities in our own community! Permission slips will be coming home this week!
