On Friday, October 4th, St. Michael School will host its annual Pet Blessing in honor of the feast of St. Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of animals and the environment. The blessing will take place at 2 PM on the school grounds, inviting students, families, and parishioners to bring their cherished pets for a special blessing.

Why Bless Animals?

The tradition of blessing animals on St. Francis' feast day is rooted in the saint’s deep love for all living creatures. St. Francis, a 12th-century Italian friar, is famous for his belief in the sanctity of all God's creations. He viewed animals not just as companions but as fellow inhabitants of the Earth, deserving of respect and care.

The blessing of pets serves as a way to give thanks for the joy and companionship they bring to our lives. It is also a reminder of our duty to protect and care for animals as part of God's creation. During the ceremony, prayers are offered in gratitude for pets and the beauty of nature, followed by an individual blessing for each animal.

St. Michael welcomes all members of the community to participate. Families are invited to bring pets of all shapes and sizes—whether dogs, cats, birds, or more unique companions. Father Amberger will conduct the blessing, and encourages children to take part, as the event teaches important lessons of kindness, compassion, and stewardship for God’s creatures.

For the safety of all, participants are asked to bring their pets on leashes or in appropriate carriers. This heartwarming event is a chance to strengthen the bonds between humans and animals while honoring the life and legacy of St. Francis of Assisi.
