The fifth and sixth grades participated in a fun, hands-on field trip today at Greenacres in Lewis Township. The students were split up into three groups and participated in three stations. In one station, students had the task of studying the skulls of some common animals found in our community. They studied the teeth, jaws, location of the eyes and size of nasal cavity and tried to determine whether the animal was a carnivore, herbivore, omnivore, or scavenger. Our students did a fantastic job, and took the assignment seriously.

In the next station, the students spent some time learning about the box turtle. Greenacres had a "rescue" that they kept there. We got to study her as she walked around and learned that Eastern Box Turtles are a protected species and things we could do to help them.

Finally, we went on a nature walk through the woods, and by the creek, on the grounds of Greenacres. The guide pointed out things like deer tracks, poison ivy, and different types of fungi. We had time to explore the creek for life and one group saw a snake, and another saw a cool salamander.

Greenacres is a really neat place for all types of learning, right here in our own community. We will continue to visit Greenacres, and we appreciate the opportunity to go today!
