The Newbery medal was named for an 18th Century British bookseller. Every year a book is selected as the most distinguished contribution to American literature for children. The first book, The Story of Mankind, was awarded the Newbery Medal in 1922. The book for 2022 is The Last Cuentista. The books vary in length, level, and subject. We are fortunate here at St. Michael School that we have almost every book that has been awarded in the last 100 years! We also have a Newbery Book Challenge for the 7/8 grades. Several students are participating in this challenge. They choose a Newbery book, read it, and take an AR test on it. If they pass the test with an 80 or higher, they get credit for it on a chart. The student who successfully reads the most Newbery Books for the year will be recognized at the end of the year. There’s nothing like a challenge to start the year and getting to read some great literature!
